PDF: Applied

Do you have an idea for an app to enhance our electoral process, to help citizens engage in their communities, or to help facilitate online activism? Here’s a unique opportunity for it to be built in a weekend by some of the world’s top civic developers.

In connection with the 2012 “Personal Democracy Forum” conference, we are bringing leading civic “hackers” together with practitioners in government and NGOs to build tools that enhance civic life through technology-driven innovation. Participants will work to build applications that address specific civic needs in keeping with this year’s “Internet is the New Political Power” PDF conference theme.

If you would like to participate in PDF: Applied, please RSVP at http: http://pdfapplied.eventbrite.com/
Please direct any questions or feedback to pdf.applied@gmail.com

What challenge do you want PDF: Applied to solve?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Open Source Traffic Map (for bikes, cars, trains and more!)

Street centerline data is becoming increasingly freely available via things like OpenStreetMap, but one thing that is going to be more and more useful for applications in the future is realtime traffic flow data--how fast traffic is flowing, and not just on roads--on train lines, via bike share bikes, and other vehicles that move over constrained pathways. Right now, the only source of this kind of data, at least for car traffic, is proprietary (via a company called INRIX).

As governments begin to release the raw data on vehicle positions via things like public transit realtime arrival tools, bike share…

    • An early-warning tool for neighborhood change

Track the telling indicators of long-term change in a neighborhood -- variations in liquor licenses, building permits, yelp reviews... etc. Understand changes relative to last year, or the neighborhood next door. See the data represented in a straightforward visual.

      Who will use it?
Block associations, groups of neighbors, community boards, housing advocates...

      • Open Source Neighbors Forums Not Gated Virtual Communities

With all the neighbor connecting venture investment online you'd think we have this space covered. We don't.

Sadly, creating private social networks for nearest neighbors is serving the most well off areas and NOT encouraging the kind of community-wide *public space* connecting that inclusively helps diverse communities to have a local agenda-setting voice. That voice can not only influence government, it can empower people to take action on the community issues that matter to them.

We propose new features and hacks to the GroupServer GPL code base (yes it is not well known) out of New Zealand. In short, it…

        • Crowdfunding Public Interest Lawsuits

Public interest lawsuits are incredibly important for securing civil, humanitarian, environmental, and other rights through the courts. Unfortunately, public interest lawsuits are inadequately funded, leading to many rights going unmet. It is also very hard for the public to find out information about existing lawsuits, and to take action on the issues that they care about in a concrete, meaningful way.

I've been trying to solve this problems through Justice Collective (http://JusticeCollective.com)--a "crowdfunding" platform where lawyers involved in public interest lawsuits can raise funds and rally supporters for their lawsuits (much like what Kickstarter does for creative projects).

          I…

            • Two young children - a plan to help Haitian families create sustainable businesses - and a promise to President Clinton

Xander Peterson (age 11) and Beau Peterson (age 10) intend to commence a project (“FISH4LIFE”) as a commitment under the Clinton Global Initiative to raise funds for a project in Haiti. Last Thanksgiving, the family visited Haiti, and met with the Caribbean Harvest Foundation, led by Valentin Abe, PhD. The organization is currently operating a very unique development model that is both helpful and profitable.

Caribbean Harvest operates a fish farming project that allows families to support themselves through the raising of fish. With a $2,400 donation for up-front capital investment, the family can generate an income of $2,000 per…

A simple taxonomical system where canvassing can be commanded from a smartphone. (Think Eve Online Fleet Command module) Would allow for the largest and smartest flashmobs ever seen with simple profiles.

                Features:
Open-Ended fully scalable taxonomical control with user definable defintions. (Fleet Commander, Wing Commander, Squad Commander)

Ability to contact members of fleet by user/administrator defined methods. (e-mail/text/voice)

Real-Time mapping (logging can be administrator defined preference) that allows the higher taxonomies to see the location of everyone within the lower taxonomies and control for taxonomical use. (Show entire fleet, show wings 1 and 2, show squad 6, 7, and 8,…

                • Follow your Address with NYC Housing Data

Get email, text and mobile app alerts when a new 311 complaint or HPD violation mentions your building. If you live in a building with more than a few units, chances are you don't know when a housing inspector makes a visit, and you really don't know when someone in another apartment calls in a complaint to 311 about their sink or heat. But as a resident of the building, you should be the first to be alerted.

                  • Stop & Frisk Data

As a result of Floyd et al vs City of New York challenging the NYPD's practices of racial profiling and unconstitutional stop-and frisks [1], stop and frisk data has been opened [2].

This dataset is huge (4.2m records with 112 columns) and available in proprietary SPSS format.

Challenge: open stop and frisk data for real by converting it into an open format, properly mapping it and documenting it to lower the threshold of entry to working with this data.

Skills looked for: researchers, editors, developers (JS, Jekyll, ), cartographers, designers.

Automatically learn "sections" of web site and distinct repositories of related data. Will help govies improve sites. Will help civic hackers track unstructured data.

                      • Create a Tungle/Doodle like tool to allow thousands of people to join OWS protests in shifts

Occupy Wall Street was evicted from Zucotti Park because they had set up camp with tents and semi permanent structures which technically broke the law. If people were just standing without the tents, the city couldn't evict them. But getting people to stand for more than 8 hours would be brutal. Imagine however if people were able to sign up in shifts of 4-8 hours to join OWS? Many more people would participate by rotating in and out without the need for tents or physical infrastructure. The successful Orange Revolution in Kiev in 2004 had 100,000+ people standing in main…

Dumping the links as standard bookmarks, ideally in OPML or as browsing history, so they can be managed like any other links of interest, would be a big contribution and allow debates to migrate out of facebook with the evidence used for them (if the context of the links, comments etc.,…
